ON MUSIC.
Descend, my muse, on airy wings sublime,
With stile exalted, and majestic thought;
Bright fancy bring, with easy wit, to trace
With solid judgment, link'd with care, the praise
Of Music. Your aid, bright Goddess, lend, with
Ev'ry stroke harmonious; strike the ear
With melody of sound, its worth to tell.
. . . [18 lines]
Then the brisk airs, cotillions, and duets,
Sonatas, allemandas, and the like,
From her gloomy seat plucks melancholy,
And on her brow it seats the smile of mirth.
